Specialist Buggy Grant Award

A Southport family, have been awarded grant funding to purchase a specialist disability buggy that will support three‑year‑old Hazel, who has Global Developmental Delay and is currently undergoing assessment for autism. Hazel experiences significant challenges when out in the community, including running off, dropping to the floor, refusing to walk and becoming extremely distressed. These behaviours place her at risk near roads and make everyday journeys unsafe without specialist equipment.

Hazel has outgrown her standard pushchair, leaving her mother, Lucy, with no option but to carry her during episodes of distress—something that has already resulted in a back injury. The new specialist buggy will provide Hazel with a safe, secure and comfortable way to travel, enabling the family to complete essential journeys such as school runs and medical appointments, while also allowing Hazel to access parks, activities and community life that she currently misses out on.

Lucy expressed her gratitude to the trustees, saying the award will “completely change our lives,” giving Hazel safety and dignity while restoring the family’s ability to leave the house without fear or physical strain. The grant ensures Hazel can safely explore the world around her and helps reduce the isolation the family has been experiencing.

This funding marks a significant step toward improving Hazel’s daily life, supporting her development, and enabling the Winthrop family to re‑engage with their community.
