Southport man regains independence thanks to Community Link Foundation
A Southport man facing life-changing health challenges has been given a renewed sense of independence thanks to support from Community Link Foundation, who provided funding for a much-needed mobility scooter.
Anthony Meleady has faced an incredibly difficult year following a diagnosis of severe myelopathy, affecting the vertebrae in his neck. After undergoing urgent spinal surgery in early 2024, complications arose when a severe hematoma developed, leaving him effectively paralysed.
The impact on Anthony’s life has been profound. Once active and independent, he has spent the past year in rehabilitation and is now in emergency accommodation while he awaits a more suitable permanent home. He is now only able to walk a couple of metres without falling and is reliant on mobility aids for a range of tasks.
Anthony also suffers from atrial fibrillation, a heart condition which recently required cardioversion, and takes medication to prevent blood clots, making his condition even more complex.
Recognising the growing barriers he faced in accessing his community, remaining active and maintaining his well-being, Community Link Foundation stepped in to help by funding a mobility scooter.
This support is already having a life-changing impact. With the scooter, Anthony is now able to move more freely, engage in local life, and reclaim some of the independence he feared he had lost.
Anthony said: “I cannot thank people enough – I feel blessed. This has changed my life, thank you so much.”
Enda Rylands, Chairman of Community Link Foundation, said: “We’re so pleased to have been able to help Anthony at such a challenging time in his life. This kind of support is only possible thanks to the generosity of our donors and our sponsors, and we want to sincerely thank every single person who contributes to our charity. You’re making a real difference to people right here in our community.”
The grant from Community Link Foundation has not only eased the physical challenges but has made a real difference to his mental health due to the independence he now has.
