Community Link Foundation has recently provided funding to help a young girl from Southport continue to enjoy the outdoor play that is so important to her wellbeing.
Five-year-old Lily Ralph has autism and has been referred for assessment for ADHD. Her mum, Jennifer, explained that time spent outdoors plays a big part in Lily’s daily routine, helping her to self-regulate and meet her sensory needs.
Lily’s old wooden swing set and climbing frame, which she used every day, had become unsafe after eight years of use and had to be removed. With the family on a limited income, replacing it wasn’t something they could afford to do straight away — but thanks to support from Community Link Foundation, a new swing set has now been funded.
Until recently, Lily had a wooden swing set and climbing frame in her garden, but after eight years of use it had become unsafe and had to be removed. For Lily, this meant losing one of her favourite ways to play and unwind.
Jennifer said:
“Lily uses outdoor play to self-regulate and it helps with her physical and emotional development. She loves swinging and getting that vestibular movement and sensory input. Without time swinging or jumping each day, Lily struggles to sleep or regulate herself. It’s going to be so helpful for Lily to help regulate herself and help keep her sensory needs met. We really appreciate it.”
The new swing set will help Lily continue to develop physically and emotionally, and give her the sensory input she needs to stay calm and happy.
