A four-year-old girl is set to experience the joy of riding a bike – something many children take for granted – thanks to a specialist arm-powered trike, part-funded by Community Link Foundation.

Aurora Simpkin-Watkinson who has Spina Bifida and is unable to use her legs, requires a trike specifically designed to be powered by her arms. The custom-built Theraplay trike not only allows her to take part in family bike rides and playtime in the garden with other children, but also supports her posture and provides a fun way to stay active and healthy. The specialist trike will help support her trunk and her legs in the right position so she can reach with her arms and pedal with them.

Her nursery has generously contributed £881 towards the total cost of the trike, and Community Link Foundation stepped in to provide the remaining £569 to ensure the trike could be purchased in full.

Chair of Trustees at Community Link Foundation, Enda Rylands, said: “We are delighted to help fund Aurora’s new trike and give her the opportunity to experience the freedom and independence that riding a bike can bring. Supporting children like Aurora to live fuller and more inclusive lives is exactly what Community Link Foundation is here for.”

The picture shows a young girl with her hair in bunches and wearing a red dress, smiling as she sits on a bouncy castle

The trike will have a huge impact on Aurora’s development and wellbeing, providing both exercise and inclusion in everyday activities with her friends and family. Without this funding, Aurora would not have been able to access this vital equipment, limiting her ability to join in with nursery and family life. It will allow the family to do activities together and it will enable Aurora to play in the garden on her bike, like her friends do.

Mum, Kathryn, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the generous donation. Aurora is an extremely feisty little girl who just wants to do everything that others do and this will really support this. We are sure she will be off like a rocket!”

Community Link Foundation is proud to work with local families and organisations to provide funding where it is needed most and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
