A young girl from Southport who suffers from chronic sleep difficulties has received a life-changing grant from Community Link Foundation to help improve her quality of life.

Six year old Ava who has been diagnosed with ADHD and is currently undergoing assessment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), experiences severe sleep problems caused by her inability to ‘switch off’ at night. Despite trying every recommended sleep hygiene strategy and creating the ideal bedtime environment, her family have found it almost impossible to help her get the rest she needs.

Specialists at Alder Hey are currently unable to prescribe medication for Ava’s condition, meaning the family have been relying solely on non-medical approaches. However, some of the sensory aids that Ava responds well to, including a weighted blanket and a high-quality cooling fan, have been out of reach financially.

Now, thanks to a grant of just over £400 from Community Link Foundation, the family have been able to purchase a weighted blanket and a Dyson Tower Fan to help Ava sleep more comfortably.

Her mum, Rebecca, said:

“We are unbelievably grateful for the support from CLF as high quality, sensory items for neurodivergence are costly and this can produce barriers to support for children, particularly when children’s services are limited to the support they can provide.

Southport and the surrounding areas are so lucky to have such a wonderful foundation to support not just individuals, but larger organisations. Thank you so much to all involved”.

The impact of Ava’s sleep difficulties has taken a toll on the entire family, with both parents and Ava’s two siblings affected by the strain of frequent disturbed nights.

Enda Rylands, chair of Community Link Foundation said:

“The difference that this grant will make to Ava and her family is significant, hopefully allowing them all to get much needed rest. We’re proud to support local people in meaningful ways like this, and we are incredibly grateful to our donors and supporters who make this possible.”

Community Link Foundation provides grants to individuals and organisations across the region, helping to fund everything from specialist equipment to support through medical or financial hardship. The charity relies on donations and fundraising events throughout the year to continue its work.
